Sajjad Karim MEP today called on the European Commission to take action to end the violence in Indian-administered Kashmir.
In a letter addressed personally to Federica Mogherini - the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy - Dr Karim expressed his concern regarding the recent outbreak of violence in the region and subsequent excessive use of force by Indian security personnel, urging her to make interventions to end it.
He also asked the Commissioner to convey his concerns to the Indian Government, stating that the current level of violence is detrimental to the EU and India’s relationship.
Dr Karim commented:
“As a lifelong campaigner of a peaceful settlement in Kashmir, the recent developments in the region are truly worrying and a step backwards.
“The methods employed by Indian security forces is deplorable and constituents of mine - many of whom are from the Kashmiri community - have expressed this feeling also. The pellets used are supposed to be non-lethal, but have in actual fact caused very serious injuries.
“I have written to Commissioner Mogherini to ask what interventions the Commission is making in order to end this unnecessary violence.
“In addition to this, I have asked her to communicate my personal concerns to the Indian Government, as this level of violence is a serious setback in future relations between the EU and India.”
