Cheshire MEP, Sajjad Karim joined the Prime Minister on his visit to Vauxhall’s plant at Ellesmere Port yesterday.
David Cameron’s visit followed the announcement this week that the new Astra has been voted European car of the year. Six out of ten Astras manufactured at Ellesmere Port are exported to the wider European market.
Commenting on the visit Sajjad said:
“I was delighted to join the Prime Minister as he made a keynote speech to Vauxhall employees.
“In his speech David Cameron laid out the importance of continuing our membership of the European Union which gives us full access to the Single Market, enabling our businesses to sell British products to 500 million people, without tariffs or trade obstacles.
“In the North West around 500,000 jobs, including over 225,000 jobs in manufacturing, are linked to EU trade and we are part of the most ambitious and comprehensive free trade agreements with the rest of the world.
In a separate meeting the Prime Minister met representatives from local businesses who had been invited by Sajjad.
Geoffrey Piper, Chief Executive of the influential North West Business Leadership Team presented the Prime Minister with a copy of the NWBLT’s statement issued last Autumn, which supports the UK staying in the EU. The NWBLT believes the arguments for staying in are even more powerful from the point of view of the North West as the proportion of UK employment dependent on EU trade is even higher in the North than in the South of England
Also present was Somnath Saha, Chief Executive of North West based Typhoo Tea.Typhoo who commented:
“I was very pleased to be invited by our local MEP, Sajjad Karim, to meet Prime Minister Cameron. Typhoo have successfully turnaround and developed business over the past 3 years as iconic British brand and Retailers’ brand manufacturer . For us as a business single market operation for procurement and sales in the European market is key for not only expansion plans but for long term sustainability. “
Following the visit Sajjad said:
“I have given the Prime Minister an assurance that he can rely on my support in his campaign for the UK to remain in the EU and have joined him "heart and soul" in our national interest. I look forward to welcoming Mr Cameron back to the North West in the weeks ahead before the British people make their decision on 23rd June.”
