Andrew Stephenson congratulates Sajjad Karim

The Chairmen of British and European Parliament Pakistan Groups celebrate Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam Award.

Andrew Stephenson who has served the Pendle constituency as their Member of Parliament for the past 5 years, called on Sajjad at his Lancashire home to offer his congratulations on Sajjad’s recent award of the Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam.

Pakistan’s highest award to non-nationals was recently presented to Sajjad by the President of Pakistan in a formal ceremony in Islamabad.

The Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam was awarded for Dr Karim’s services to Pakistan in building UK/EU/Pakistan relations. Quaid-i-Azam is the name given to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founding father of Pakistan.

Andrew Stephenson said that he was delighted to be able to personally congratulate Dr Karim on his award saying “This highest award is in recognition of Dr Karim’s tireless efforts to promote relations between this country and Pakistan.

“I also bring with me the Prime Minister’s personal tribute for Sajjad’s work.”

Prime Minister David Cameron stated “Sajjad Karim is a hardworking MEP who spearheaded tariff free access to the EU for Pakistan and has done much to promote relations between the UK, EU and Pakistan.

“I congratulate him on being awarded the Sitara-i-Quaid-i-Azam. You are a great ambassador for the party, the region and the United Kingdom.”

Thanking Mr Stephenson for his kind messages Sajjad who formed and chairs the European Parliament’s Friends of Pakistan Group responded saying:

“I am very proud to have accepted this award on behalf of all British Pakistanis.

“Andrew Stephenson throughout his time as MP for Pendle has worked tirelessly for his constituency and for developing UK links with Pakistan.

“As Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Pakistan, Andrew Stephenson has played a key role in ensuring that support for Pakistan in our UK Parliament has always been available. Andrew has worked closely with Prime Minister David Cameron  and myself to help deliver GSP+ status for Pakistan through the European Parliament which is already delivering great economic benefits to Pakistan.

“I very much hope that his constituents will re-elect him in order that he can continue his excellent work representing them in such an effective manner.”
